Improve trade via limitation of resources to special places

To improve trade activities and also force to build "unique" towns it would be great to have resources only found in special places / nodes on the planet.
As an example, atm you can find oil all over the planet and there is no big need of build large tankers (update V1.3 :D) or carry it long ways.
That takes out mostly a large part from the game we see in the real life = transportation of stuff in large amounts.
I can imagine, with a change in that system (why we have so much wood in the desert?) it can give the game much more depth and an additional layer of needed things and could be a good preparation for trains and also more use for boats, maybe an own transportation profession.

i like the idea of specialized towns, but in practice it would just be a long trip to trade with an individual far away rather than town to town trading. also taking wood out of the dessert would hurt miners a fair bit. and they dont got alot to offer to incentivize people bringing it to them early game, so its just miners going further and doing more work to get set up. not improving co-operation

That is already the case - ores are distributed over different biomes, so are plants and animals. Oil is the only thing not limited to any specific biome, but will get changes as well, specifically to avoid it spawning in ocean areas where one cannot get it in the default settings.
